It's going smoothly. Or, well, until it isn't. (Tautology, what a joy it is.) Eduardo does this a fair amount of the time, Mark's noticed, and with increasing frequency as of late— even if 'as of late' refers to times years ago combined with this outing right now, a piecewise collection of interactions Mark has with his best friend from before that friendship was torn apart altogether. The point is, Eduardo always tries to let things go Mark's way. He knows that. He's known that for some time, those little protests about how Facesmash might not be the best idea growing quieter and quieter, the not-so-minute amount of pride Eduardo felt at being punched by the Phoenix suddenly quieted. Mark knows that, he appreciates it even if he's never really been able to say thanks as such before. But increasingly, Eduardo's ability to deal and cope has been worn away.
Mark has to wonder if it's his fault.
It feels like being shoved down a few steps at once when that last bit reaches his ears. Eduardo didn't expect for the two of them to fall apart over the course of years? To not have made up after that amount of time? Did he expect more, less— no, that's not a question, he's definitely expected more from Mark, he always tends to think the best of his friend first, only to get let down later. It's probably an awful way to deal. Mark, on the other hand, he expects very little of most people.
"I didn't expect it, either," he manages, his expression tense. "And I didn't like it. I don't like it. I don't want you to expect it, which is why I didn't want to bring it up."
