He's trying to learn not to have too many expectations of people. It isn't the fact that Mark thinks people are a waste of space, because they aren't, not even those who scamper away from class like it's the plague. Everyone contributes to the overall progression of the human race, each person part of a system, and in some ways part of that rat race too. Science provides the adaptation and sentience pushes that forward to discovery, the end point being that people are kind of cool, right down to the capacity for bitchiness. Instead, the reason why Mark is learning not to have too many expectations (or perhaps more accurately, too specific expectations) of people is because when he does, Mark finds himself let down again and again, enough that he knows trying to guess a person's next step is probably a waste of time and certainly enough to know that he doesn't enjoy being let down or experiencing those metaphorical slaps to the face. Usually, the best policy involves lowered expectations while simultaneously bracing oneself for everything, a lesson learned after dealing with Sean for so many years, but with Eduardo it's just a touch harder. Mark can't quite quell the disappointment at not hearing an immediate response from Eduardo, though it's slightly belied by the pleasure of at least having put his mistakes out there.

No wonder people go to therapists. Unloading's a lot more cathartic than he expected.

Things get better when Eduardo finally does say something after all, steps tapping on the floor as Wardo quickly closes the distance between the two of them. Mark doesn't wear emotion on his face very often, but there's a small smile that tugs at his lips and rests there, calmer than the hands in his pockets that are still wriggling around and pulling on stray threads. He shifts his weight about on his feet, back and forth, until Wardo's standing by him again and it's obviously... not all fine, but it's a start. Kind of disappointing that there aren't lawyers around, nor even bank accounts to quabble over. Eduardo vaguely has the look of someone sitting unfulfilled.

Mark nods firmly. "I was hoping that I wouldn't be forced to comb every square foot of this island in search for a decent beer."
