This time, at least, Eduardo is somewhat prepared for it, Mark's ability to say something serious and immediately deflect to a more casual subject. It doesn't mean that it doesn't sting a little, but, to be fair, he doesn't know what to say anyway, and therefore can't really object to delaying a more emotional conversation for a while longer. However much he might have wanted reconciliation, for some gesture on Mark's part to show that he isn't really so easily dispensable, there's no quick fix in a situation like this. Too much has been broken for the pieces to be so easily glued back together. They won't be what they were. They can have something, though. Such an admittance on Mark's part has to be proof of that. It won't stop Eduardo from being cautious, but it shows that any effort made isn't for nothing, and that's really all he's asked for from Mark since they met. Eduardo can deal with his idiosyncrasies if he knows there's some reciprocation of feelings. And remorse, well, there's not much better sign of it than that.
"Well, there's a bar right across the path that's kind of hard to miss, you wouldn't have had to go very far," Eduardo points out, head tilting to the side, though there's a slight distance to his tone, suggesting that the details of it aren't important. He stands by what he said about no longer expecting anything from Mark, but following a statement like the one just made, it's fairly clear, at least to him, that the beer isn't the actual issue here. He has no intention of saying as much. That little smile of Mark's, the one that Eduardo almost mirrors, that nearly comes as a relief, says enough on its own. "Unless you want something to eat, then there's a place a little farther away."
